Fridge Ice Maker Is Not Working

Appliance Repair Houston » Refrigerator Issues » Fridge Ice Maker Is Not Working

At first glance, a non-working ice maker in a fridge may seem like a simple issue—just replace it with a new one, and everything will be fine. However, in reality, there are many possible reasons why an ice maker might not be functioning. Let’s go over some common causes and provide recommendations for diagnosing and fixing the issue when possible. Read more about our refrigerator repair:

Reasons Why the Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Making Ice

The Ice Maker Is Turned Off – №1

One of the most common reasons for an ice maker not working is that the user has simply not turned it on. Either the ice maker switch on the fridge’s control panel is off, or the ice maker arm is in the up position, which means it is turned off.

Solution

Visually inspect the control panel or the ice maker itself and ensure that it is switched on.

No Water Supply to the Ice Maker – №2

If the ice maker is not getting water, it won’t be able to produce ice.

Solution

Move the refrigerator slightly and check if the water supply valve on the wall is open. Additionally, make sure that water is actually flowing from the valve by briefly testing it. If you’re unsure how to inspect or fix the problem, it’s best to call a professional technician for a thorough diagnosis and repair.

Diagnosis and repair cost: from $150

Ice Maker Heating Element Is Burned Out – №3

The ice maker has a small heating element that helps release the ice cubes. If this component fails, the ice may get stuck in the mold, preventing new ice from forming.

Diagnosis

Check manually or visually if there is frozen ice stuck in the ice maker’s tray. If you find ice that isn’t being ejected, you may need to replace the entire ice maker.

Replacement cost: from $300

Clogged Water Filter – №4

The water filter plays a crucial role in ensuring clean water flows to your refrigerator’s ice maker. Over time, the filter can become clogged with impurities, mineral deposits, or debris, restricting or completely blocking water flow. When this happens, the ice maker may produce smaller ice cubes, take longer to make ice, or stop working altogether. A clogged filter can also affect the taste and clarity of the ice.

Solution

Check when you last replaced your fridge’s water filter. Remember, the filter should be replaced every six months for optimal performance.

Maintenance cost: from $200

High Freezer Temperature – №5

If the freezer temperature is above 5°F (-15°C), the ice maker may stop working completely or produce very little ice, usually at night when the freezer door remains closed for a long time.

Solution

Use a thermometer to check the freezer temperature. If it’s 5°F or higher, you should call a technician, as identifying and fixing the root cause of high freezer temperatures can be difficult without professional tools.

Diagnosis and repair cost: from $300

Ice Maker Temperature Sensor Failure – №6

The ice maker relies on a temperature sensor to determine when to dispense ice or fill the mold with water. If the sensor is defective, the ice maker may receive incorrect signals.

Solution

Unfortunately, diagnosing a faulty temperature sensor requires specialized tools. If you suspect this issue, it’s best to contact a professional technician.

Diagnosis and repair cost: from $300

Other Possible Causes – №7

Some ice maker issues are more complex and require a trained technician to diagnose and repair. These include:

  • A faulty main control board or ice maker control board
  • Broken wires inside the freezer door, especially if the ice maker is built into the door
  • A frozen water supply tube, preventing water from reaching the ice maker • A malfunctioning water inlet valve that fails to open properly

All of these issues require specialized knowledge and experience. If you are unable to determine the cause of the problem, it’s best to call an experienced appliance repair professional.

    • My ice maker was working fine last night, but today—nothing. The freezer is still cold, so I don’t think it’s completely broken. Could this be a clogged water line? I don’t want to mess with it too much and make it worse. Any advice before I call someone?

      • Hi Jessica!
First, check if there is still ice in the ice maker or if it is empty. If there is ice left, the issue is most likely with the ice maker itself. If there is no ice, check when you last replaced the water filter—it should be changed every six months. If necessary, replace it.

A good way to check if the filter is working properly is to test the water dispenser. If water flows from the dispenser, then the filter is fine, and the issue lies elsewhere. In this case, you should call a technician to diagnose and fix the problem.

We practically diagnosed the issue over the phone, and in the end, it just needed a filter replacement and some general fridge maintenance.
